چکیده
The application of an electric field over a ceramic powder compact at elevated temperatures gives rise to “flash sintering”. phenomenon occurs critical combination and temperature, which leads rapid increase in the power dissipated within sample. This results sample densification far shorter timescales than those required with conventional sintering. paper reports first successful pressureless flash sintering SiC B C aids. Mean relative densities up 94.4% have been achieved several minutes using alumina tube furnace 1500°C. temperature during was similar used for (2100-2200 °C). electrical response event consistent thermal runaway. However, negative coefficient resistivity responsible runaway originated primarily from effects sintering, contrast case oxide ceramics. attributed heating formation liquid phase. densest specimen had grain size 5.9 µm ± 0.5 Vickers hardness (HV5) 24.7 GPa GPa. These values were conventionally sintered specimens same but production time samples reduced by more 6 h lower 700°C.

Probing the densification mechanisms during flash sintering of ZnO
Using ZnO as a model system, the densification mechanisms of flash sintering are investigated. Controlled experiments via limiting the maximum current or the effective ramp rate suggest that both the maximum specimen temperature and the high heating rate (on the order of 200 C/s) are essential for the rapid densification during the flash sintering. Moreover, benchmarking rapid thermal annealing...
متن کاملDensification Kinetics and Structural Evolution During Microwave and Pressureless Sintering of 15 nm Titanium Nitride Powder
Microwave sintering (MWS) of commercially available 15-nm-size nanocrystalline TiN powder was studied. Densification kinetics and grain growth mechanisms of nano-TiN were evaluated using non-isothermal heating up to 1500 °C with variable heating rates. A true nanocrystalline ceramic with ~80-nm-size grains and 94.5 % theoretical density was obtained via MWS consolidation at 1400 °C. At higher t...
متن کاملDENSIFICATION AND MICROSTRUCTURE CHARACTERISTICS OF A PREALLOYED ALPHA BRASS POWDER PROCESSED BY LIQUID PHASE SINTERING
The rapidly solidified prealloyed alpha brass powder with a size range of 40 to 100 μm produced by water atomization process was consolidated using liquid phase sintering process. The relationships between sintering temperature, physic-mechanical properties and microstructural characteristics were investigated. Maximum densification was obtained at 930 °C, under 600 MPa compacting pressure,...

Article history: Received 19 June 2017 Received in revised form 14 July 2017 Accepted 14 July 2017 Available online xxxx Two-step flash sintering (TSFS) was proposed as a new ceramic fabrication method to achieve fast densification with suppressed grain growth. Using ZnO as an examplar, ~96.5% of theoretical density was achieved using TSFS with a grain size of ~370 nm, representing a N3 times r...

B4C and its composites with TiB2 as second phase continues to be extensively used as the preferred ceramic material in military applications as armor systems for absorbing and dissipating kinetic energy from high velocity projectiles. It also exhibits a high melting point (2427 °C), and high neutron absorption cross section. Pressureless sintering of the B 4C-nanoTiB2 nanocomposite using small ...
